Interesting Facts
- Ganesha is invoked first in almost every Vedic ritual, including the pujas of other deities; the opening step of a formal ceremony is literally called Ganapati Puja or Ganesh sthapana.
- He carries the titles Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles) and Vighnakarta (placer of obstacles) at the same time — the tradition holds that the obstacle and its removal come from the same hand.
- The Ganapati Atharvashirsha, a short Upanishadic text recited during his worship, identifies Ganesha with the syllable Om itself.
- The large public Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations familiar today were shaped in 1890s Pune, when Lokmanya Tilak turned a household festival into a community gathering.
Niyam — Observances
- Bathe before the session and wear clean clothes; red or yellow is traditional.
- Keep the day sattvic — no meat, alcohol, onion or garlic.
- Offer durva grass and a sweet (modak or laddoo) at your own altar if you have one.
- Do not begin the new venture the puja is meant for until the session is complete.
- Avoid arguments and harsh words for the rest of the day.
