Interesting Facts
- The Sri Sukta, the oldest surviving hymn to Lakshmi, survives as a khila (appendix hymn) attached to the Rigveda, and is still the core recitation of a formal Mahalakshmi Puja today.
- Lakshmi is described as emerging from the churning of the ocean (samudra manthana) and choosing Vishnu as her consort — which is why she is worshipped alongside him in most household shrines rather than alone.
- In the Diwali night puja, account books and business ledgers are traditionally placed before the goddess and formally opened for the new year; the practice is called chopda pujan in western India.
Niyam — Observances
- Bathe and wear clean, preferably new or freshly washed clothes on the day of the puja.
- Keep the food sattvic for the day — no meat, no alcohol, no onion or garlic.
- Clean the house, especially the entrance and the prayer space, before the puja begins.
- Light a lamp at your own altar at the time of the puja and keep it burning through the session.
- Avoid lending or borrowing money on the day, and avoid harsh speech within the household.
