• The nine grahas are the seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — plus the two shadow points Rahu and Ketu.
• In temple shrines the nine are arranged on a square platform with the Sun at the centre and no two figures facing each other, so that no planet's gaze falls on another.
• Each graha has its own fixed jaap count, grain, metal, colour and day; a Navagraha ritual works through all nine in sequence rather than treating them as one deity.
• The nine Navagraha temples around Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, each dedicated to a single planet, are still visited as a single pilgrimage circuit.

• Bathe early each day of the ritual and wear clean clothes.
• Keep the diet sattvic for the full duration.
• Donate the nine grains (navadhanya) or a cooked meal on the day of completion.
• Light a lamp at your altar each morning while the ritual is running.
• Avoid alcohol, meat and conflict at home for the duration.
