Interesting Facts

  • The Satyanarayan Katha is traditionally attributed to the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana, and is recited in five chapters during the puja.
  • Every story in the katha turns on the same point: someone promises the puja, receives what they hoped for, forgets the promise, and suffers until they keep it — the puja is a lesson about keeping one's word, which is what satya means.
  • The prasad, called sheera or sapatha, is made of equal measures of semolina, sugar and ghee with banana, and is regarded as an inseparable part of the rite rather than a sweet served afterwards.
  • It is one of the few major household pujas with no fixed festival date, which is why it can be held on any Purnima or whenever the occasion arises.

Niyam — Observances

  • Bathe and wear clean clothes; the whole family should be present for the katha if possible.
  • Many families fast until the puja and katha are complete, breaking it with the prasad.
  • Keep the day sattvic — no meat, alcohol, onion or garlic in the house.
  • Listen to all five chapters of the katha without leaving partway through.
  • Share the prasad with neighbours or friends rather than keeping it within the household alone.
