Interesting Facts
- The Bhagavata Purana describes the young gopis of Vraja worshipping Katyayani through the month of Margashirsha, bathing at dawn in the Yamuna and praying for Krishna as their husband — the origin of the Katyayani Vrata.
- Katyayani is the sixth of the nine forms of Durga and is worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri.
- Her name comes from the sage Katyayana, in whose hermitage she is said to have first appeared and been worshipped.
- The mantra used in this puja is the same one the tradition assigns to the gopis' vrata, adapted so the devotee names their own wish for a partner.
Niyam — Observances
- Bathe early on the day of the puja, before sunrise if you can manage it.
- Many devotees keep a fast of fruit and milk until the puja is complete — follow what your health allows.
- Keep the day sattvic: no meat, alcohol, onion or garlic.
- Wear clean clothes, traditionally red, and offer red flowers at your own altar.
- Speak respectfully of any past match or family who refused you; the vrata asks for freedom from resentment.
