Interesting Facts
- Kubera is the guardian (dikpala) of the northern direction, which is why cash boxes, safes and lockers are traditionally placed against a north wall and opened facing north.
- In the Ramayana he appears as Vaishravana, son of the sage Vishrava and half-brother of Ravana, who took the city of Lanka from him — so Kubera is remembered as much for wealth lost as for wealth held.
- He is worshipped as the treasurer rather than the giver: the tradition pairs him with Lakshmi, on the understanding that she brings wealth in and he keeps it from draining away.
Niyam — Observances
- Take an early bath before the scheduled time and sit facing north during the session if you can.
- Keep a sattvic diet for the day; many devotees also keep a partial fast until the puja is complete.
- Do not take on a new loan or make a large discretionary purchase on the day of the puja.
- Give something in charity on the same day, however small — traditionally food or grain.
- Speak gently at home; avoid arguments about money with family on the day.
