Interesting Facts
- The verse appears in the Rigveda (7.59.12) and again in the Yajurveda, making it one of the oldest mantras still in continuous daily use.
- It is also called the Tryambaka mantra, after its opening word, and is addressed to Shiva as the three-eyed one.
- Its central image is agricultural: the devotee asks to be released as gently as a ripe cucumber separates from its stem — a request for ease and freedom, not for a change in fate.
- The traditional full count is 125,000 repetitions, which is why it is performed over several days by a team of pandits rather than in one sitting.
Niyam — Observances
- Bathe early each day of the jaap and wear clean, simple clothes.
- Keep a strictly sattvic diet for the full duration — no meat, eggs, alcohol, onion or garlic.
- Light a lamp each morning at your own altar for the days the jaap is running.
- Chant the mantra yourself a fixed number of times daily, even if only 11 or 21, alongside the pandits.
- Keep the household calm; avoid conflict, gossip and harsh speech for the duration.
