Interesting Facts
- Mars is called Bhauma or Kuja in the tradition, meaning 'son of the Earth', which is why the mantra addresses Bhaumaya; the Mangalnath temple at Ujjain is regarded as his birthplace.
- The traditional jaap count for Mars is 10,000 repetitions — each of the nine planets has its own fixed count in the graha shanti tradition, and this puja follows the classical figure.
- The remedy is customarily arranged before the wedding date is fixed, and is followed by a dashansh havan of one-tenth the jaap count.
- Red is the colour assigned to Mars: red cloth, red flowers, masoor dal and coral are the traditional offerings and donations.
Niyam — Observances
- Take an early bath on Tuesday, the day of Mars, and wear clean clothes.
- Keep a sattvic diet for the days of the ritual; many devotees avoid salt on the Tuesday.
- Avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol for the full duration.
- Donate something red — masoor dal, red cloth or jaggery — on the day of the puja.
- Keep your temper carefully in check on the day; the tradition treats restraint as part of the remedy.
