• Pitru Paksha is a fixed fortnight of sixteen lunar days that closes on Mahalaya Amavasya; rites for an ancestor whose date of death is unknown are performed on that final day.
• Tarpan is made with water, black sesame seeds and darbha grass, offered through the pitru tirtha — the part of the palm below the little finger — a hand position used only for ancestral offerings.
• Gaya in Bihar is the classical destination for pind daan, and the tradition holds that rites performed there discharge the obligation of the whole lineage.
• The rites are addressed not to named individuals alone but to three generations of the line together, on both the father's and the mother's side.

Niyam — Observances

• Bathe early on each day and wear clean, plain clothes; avoid new clothes and ornaments.
• Keep a strictly sattvic diet for the duration — no meat, eggs, alcohol, onion or garlic.
• Feed someone on the day of the rite: traditionally a guest, a needy person, or an animal such as a crow, cow or dog.
• Avoid celebrations, shopping and new beginnings during Pitru Paksha.
• Speak of the departed with respect and, if you can, name them aloud during the session.
