• Rahu and Ketu are chhaya grahas, shadow planets: they are not physical bodies but the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, which is why they are held responsible for eclipses.
• The tradition traces them to the asura Svarbhanu, who drank the nectar of immortality in disguise and was beheaded — the head became Rahu and the body Ketu, both immortal and permanently opposite each other in the chart.
• Because the two are always exactly 180 degrees apart, the Kaal Sarp configuration simply means every other planet has fallen on one side of that axis.
