• Saraswati appears in the Rigveda first as a river, and only later as the goddess of speech, learning and music — the association with flowing water and flowing speech is the same image.
• On Vasant Panchami, children are traditionally given their first letters in the ceremony called Vidyarambham or Akshara Abhyasam, tracing letters in rice or sand before the goddess.
• Students and musicians traditionally place books and instruments before the goddess during Navratri and do not use them until they are taken back up on Vijayadashami.

• Keep the food sattvic for the day and avoid heavy meals before the puja.
• Place books, notes or an instrument at your altar during the session as an offering.
• Do not place books on the floor or step over them on the day.
• Keep the day free of screens and entertainment as far as is practical until the puja is complete.
