Interesting Facts
- The homa is addressed not to Vishnu directly but to his discus, the Sudarshana Chakra, treated as a deity in its own right with his own form, mantra and shrine.
- In many South Indian temples the Sudarshana icon is carved back-to-back with Narasimha on a single stone, so that turning the image reveals the other face — protection and ferocity as two sides of one presence.
- The Sudarshana Ashtakam, eight verses still recited at these homas, is attributed to Vedanta Desika in the fourteenth century.
- The name means 'good vision' or 'auspicious sight' — the tradition reads the chakra as something that clears what obstructs, rather than a weapon alone.
Niyam — Observances
- Bathe early on the day and wear clean clothes before the session.
- Keep a strictly sattvic diet for the day — no meat, eggs, alcohol, onion or garlic.
- Sit facing east during the homa if you can, and keep a lamp lit at your own altar.
- The whole family should attend together where possible, since the rite is offered for the household.
- Avoid confrontation with the person or party you are troubled by on the day of the homa.
