• The mantra comes from the Vastoshpati hymn of the Rigveda, addressed to the lord of the dwelling and asking that the house be a welcoming and untroubled place to live.
• In the Vastu Purusha Mandala, the square grid that governs a building's layout, forty-five deities are held to occupy fixed cells — the puja greets all of them, not one deity.
• The tradition frames Vastu Purusha as a figure pinned face-down beneath the building by the gods, who granted that he would be honoured by whoever lives above him; the rite is that act of honouring.
• The first cooking done in a new house is traditionally milk boiled over until it spills, marking abundance entering the home.

• Clean the house thoroughly and keep the entrance and the kitchen clear before the session.
• The family should bathe and wear new or freshly washed clothes on the day.
• Keep the day sattvic and cook only vegetarian food in the new kitchen on the first day.
• Enter with the right foot first at the muhurat time and light a lamp in the prayer space before anything else.
